One of the cutest ideas that I've seen is using the Dewey Decimal system and
objects. An elementary librarian used this idea but I know that you could
also move it into higher levels...I did some at the university level.

Taking each main area of the DDC system (000, 100, 200, etc.) you would
display the Dewey number (on colored paper, cardboard-backed) and a small
description of what that Dewey number represented in areas of book subjects.
Many of the classification areas got creative (with the 500's--
dinosaurs--small toy dinosaurs, plants, etc.) or the 700's--games (packages
of dominoes, cards, etc., to show the specific area). You get the idea.
You can review your DDC to find areas that might give you some "creative"
ideas for using the system in a tactile format. (You must remember, I was
once a librarian for blind and visually impaired students, so this was a
great idea for me to use with students because I could give them a tactile
"idea" of what the system meant.) This idea works well for everyone,
though!

I thought that the librarian who did it was great because not only did it
fill up the shelves that were almost empty, but it was a great way to
introduce the DDC system to students -- or start a conversation when someone
asked why there were "objects" on the shelves where the books should be....

Just one idea...
