Many thanks to all who responded. You've helped save my sanity! Melissa Askew Media Specialist Tarrant Elementary School Tarrant, AL heymist@yahoo.com Here are some ideas... Demco makes a display using Mr. Wiggles, a character who tells children how they should treat books. There is also a book that goes along with it. I made a poster called "Good Library Citizenship" and listed the library rules. I plan on discussing that with the children. The librarian I did my student teaching under does a little skit the second meeting. She dresses up in a lab coat with a stethoscope and she gathers her pile of damaged books. She uses an accent and she "diagnoses" the books problem. Each child gets a popsicle stick with a happy face on one side and a sad face on the other. She reviews good and bad book treatment. For example, She'll say, "Leave your books out in the rain." The students when then show her the sad face side of the popsicle stick. Here are some great books to start the year with: First Day Jitters by Dannenberg (sp?) A Fine Fine School by Creech Mr. Wiggle's Book by Craig The Library Dragon by Leedy The Librarian from the Black Lagoon by Thaler Definitely use Miss Bindergarten gets ready for Kindergarten (though check to be sure the K teacher isn't already using it. The Library Dragon is my favorite for gr. 1. Caldecott award winner A Story, A Story retold by---Gale E. Haley, is great because of the beginning and ending little couplet about story telling, Phrases such as "children gathered round my knee" and "a story, a story, let it come, let it go" set the tone I want with my youngsters. And of course it starts the year by telling the folk tale of how the stories came to the world. In response to a request from a new LMS, elementary library media > specialists in my county have suggested the following books for K-2 > orientations: > > The Library > Library Dragon > Library 'Lil > Walter's Magic Wand > Stella Louella's Runaway Book > Red Light, Green Light, Mama and Me > Blue Bug Goes to the Library > I Took My Frog to the Library > > Can You Guess Where We're Going? by Elvira Wood is a new one about > going to a public library. > > I sometimes read books that are about reading too, like > > Fix-It by David McPhail (good for K) > Wolf! by Becky Bloom (good for 1-2) > More Than Anything Else (Booker T. Washington will be studied by gr. 3 > later in the year) > Aunt Chip and the Great Triple Creek Dam Affair (4th, maybe 5th)and > > Alistair in Outer Space > __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
