Martinez, Floyd._Spirits of the High Mesa._Arte Publico, 1997 [1-55885-198-4] Flavio is growing up in a rural town in New Mexico in the early 1950s. His grandfather, El Grande, is the wise man in the town who everyone turns to for advice. Electricity comes to town, the new lumber plant moves in and things begin to change in this peaceful community. Then the Gringos move in. Flavio is tossed between the new exciting things happening to this town and old wisdom of his grandfather. This 192 page book is just full of Spanish expressions which are not translated or is any glossary provided and I found myself wondering what was being said at times. But that aside, it is a touching story of the clash between the old ways and modern changes. *************** Frederick Muller Halsted Middle School Library 59 Halsted Street Newton, NJ 07860 voice (973) 383-7440 ext 228 FAX (973) 383-7432 My book reviews are compiled at: http://www.halsted.org/br.htm My personal web site is: http://users.tellurian.net/fmuller =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=- All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
