I will be teaching a unit on the Civil War to fifth graders in the near future. I always integrate language arts instruction with this unit and am needing some novel suggestions. It seems that there are an abundance of picture books and higher level children's novels. What I need are novels on a high-third, low-fourth grade level. When I taught fourth grade, I used Clyde Robert Bulla's books (A Lion to Guard Us and Pocahontas and the Strangers) for instruction. These books are just the level I am looking for, but with a Civil War topic. Thanks in advance for your response. I'll be sure to post all responses. Andrea M.
