Hello LM_NET friends, I got a number of responses to my request for information on = scope/sequence for bibliographic citations. THANKS for all your = responses. My teacher is happy! (and so am I - I confess I hadn't given = a lot of thought to differentiated citations for different grades, but = it makes a lot of sense!). =20 A number of people recommended the following site: =20 http://www.intac.com/~aroldi/index.html [Just click on "Compiling a = Bibliography" in the menu at the left of the home page] I also got a couple of recommendations for Kathy Schrock's guidelines at = school.discovery.com/schrockguide/ Scroll down to the=20 very bottom of the page, and click "Formats for Elementary Students." = This site is based on the site above! http://nausetschools.org/research/works2.htm=20 If you are looking for more indepth guidelines/standards, one person = recommended the Virginia English Standards of Learning, which is = available online at = http://www.pen.k12.va.us/VDOE/Superintendent/Sols/EnglishSOL02.html. Several people made more general comments, including -I know as a middle school librarian, I do try to teach citing sources. = I use MLA, but SOLs say students can use either MLA or APA. -I've used an abbreviated bibliographic citation form with my elementary = students (grades 4-6) with middle school and high school students being expected to write full bibliographic citations. I = think the objective is to help students learn that they must give credit for the resources they use. =20 -We had a school wide committee work on this a about 10 years ago. = Students do their first research at 2nd grade, they are expected to = include title and page we add author at 4th, going to full citations for = everything except the most complex at 6th. They are expected to have = citations for everything starting at 6th, but for some complicated = things we do the citation for them the first time. - I am in a K-5 building. I have third grade fill in a full = bibliographic citation, but I give them blanks to fill in with a label = under each to show what part to put where. We work on capitalization, = order, and punctuation. Fourth grade has a citation workbook. each = page is a different type citation. I have them do the full citation. = giving them format and examples. I expect them to do capitals and = punctuation correctly. I allow them to fix it, as many times as it = takes, until it is correct. The workbook takes maybe 6 or 7 lessons to = complete throughout the year, but they have it to refer to for their own = classroom projects. We make it fun, by putting our own names in as the = "second author" or the editor. Or creating the information about a made = up book. Fifth grade has a 45 minute lesson in which they do all = types given format examples and given the needed information for each. = All they need to do is plug it in the correct format. punctuation, etc. = must be correct. I grade theirs with points off for ANYTHING incorrect. = Of course, I always=20 allow them to re-do it until it is correct. So they all have the = opportunity to get 100%. The learning is in the doing and re-doing.
