I was asked to post a hit to my querry and am happy to! Thank you everyone. You're
making me look good.

To save time, I usually read the ORIGINAL version of the Best Christmas Pageant
Ever which was published in Redbook one Christmas (mid 60's??) and then later the
author added to it to create the book. The story obviously is the same, just not
as embellished. It takes me about 45 minutes to 1hour to read the entire thing
aloud (I read it in three increments of about 20 minutes each)

Not Christmas oriented, but *Because of Winn-Dixie* is a wonderful read-aloud; so
is *Love that Dog* by Sharon Creech.

A Certain Small Shepherd by Rebecca Caudill tugs at your heartstrings and is
shorted than The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.

This is not a novel but I think you would like the book and so would your
students. It is called the Christmas Collie - the story about a boy who gets a
collie for Christmas. Why not read a series of picture books - Jan Brett has
wonderful Christmas books. I find it is a welcome break for the intermediate
students since we tend to read them chapter books.

A wonderful book, but sad, is Bill Wallace's The Christmas Spurs. It's only about
121 pages long.

I would recommend The House Without a Christmas Tree by Gail Rock. It really gives
a good message.

The House Without a Christmas Tree was a favorite of my 4th graders when I was
still in the classroom.
