It is sad to read that anyone in our profession would even think that
libraries are a privilege. Libraries are a direct extension of the first
amendment. They are in now way a privilege. The Supreme court has long
held this view. Once a public or public school library is established it
must conform to the First Amendment. The only restraint is a broad
community standard not any individual standards. It is really quite scary
to hear a librarian say this. The first thing Hitler and Lenin did was
restrict library materials. The next thing was to burn the books.
