Origin of a phrase

I had an English teacher come to the library today asking for the origin =
of the phrase  "cold turkey", as in quitting smoking cold turkey.
And right away I thought of the great people on LM-NET.
Any help in locating a source for looking up this phrase or the exact =
information would be greatly appreciated.
