I have been using my commute time to catch up on middle school literature by
listening to the books on tape. In Dicey's Song Mina makes a comment about
Dicey's grandmother having a reputation for "weird chess." I had never
heard this phrase before, and couldn't understand it on tape, and replayed
and replayed the phrase, thinking maybe it was "witchness"---which doesn't
make any sense at all. I looked it up in the book, and there it is: weird
chess. I can guess that it has something to do with strange behavior,
witchcraft, or eccentricity. But I cannot find an explanation for the
phrase in any reference books I've checked. Perhaps it is explained in some
teaching materials for the book. Perhaps it is a common regionalism that
someone out there amongst you knows about.

Does anyone know what the expression means? Have any of you heard of it
before (other than reading it in the book)? If so, please e-mail me. I
think it is so odd that there is just this one unusual expression and it is
not explained anywhere.

What a wonderful story, though!
