NEW CLASS BEGINS March 4  - Totally Online!
The University of Northern Iowa College of Education is accepting
registrations for the spring 2002 online professional development
classes that begin in March and April. No payment is due until the class
begins.

Violence in Schools: What Teachers, Administrators and Counselors Can Do
Bullying, Gangs, Assault, Guns & Knives, Prejudice & Hate

Phyl Burger, instructor for Violence in Schools: What Teachers,
Administrators and Counselors Can Do, says:

"School violence wears many faces. It includes gang activity, locker
thefts, bullying and intimidation, gun use, assault -- anything that
produces a victim. Violence is perpetrated against students, teachers
and staff, and ranges from intentional vendettas to accidental killings
of bystanders."

This new course is designed for K-12 teachers, guidance counselors,
specialists and school administrators and will focus on best practices
in creating a safe environment for students to learn.

Course topics include bullies in school, school violence, teaching
values, ongoing learning activities that create safe school environments
and how to help students respond to current day news events of
disasters.

Activities will include:
   * Completing a school safety checklist.
   * Reviewing best practices and programs that work in dealing with
bullies and school violence.
   * Discussing how to's for teachers, parents and community working
together.
   * Designing effective learning activities that integrate school
safety issues with existing curriculum.
