Thank you to all those that responded with tips on dividing and moving library collections! The original post is included below. The additional tips are with preceded by a #. [I was concerned about how to spend June and July, but now I'll have some material for writing "How I Spent My Summer Vacation." :-) Original: I am working on a plan to "divide and move" 3 libraries over the summer. Our buildings are being reconfigured so the collections need to meet the needs of the new group of patrons. Currently we have 2 buildings that are PK-4 and another 5-8. We're moving to a PK-3, 4-5, 6-8. Both elementary collections were just automated this fall (still continuing on some), but will need to be rebarcoded if moved to another building. Collection - check curriculum guides to match topics with materials - check reading levels (include some above and below grade level) - request funding for holes in the collection # If your written curriculum guides are not recently up to date, you may wish to have faculty (dept. chairs) contribute to the decisions about which subjects belong in whose schools. # you should try weeding again even though it was probably done before this automating Furniture - tables and chairs appropriate for age - stuffed animals, posters, etc. to appropriate age level - some shelving shifted to more appropriate age level building (taller bookcases for older students) Supplies - blank computer disks to download MARC records and take to another building - additional barcodes and protectors for rebarcoding items - boxes and labels for packing materials (tape for closing) - patron cards/barcodes # When you actually get to the packing phase of this project it is so important to have each box labeled so you know what is in each box when you begin to unpack. # It will be a real pain, but **keep the books in order.** By that, I mean keeping the books in each carton in order, and labeling cartons with LARGE Dewey numbers, Fic Aa-Am, that sort of thing. This will be harder because you are separating them, but it will save time at the far end. # Also, I found it useful to leave an empty shelf every now and again, because no matter how careful you are, stray boxes will turn up and you'll have less shifting to do if there are empty spaces. # You may wish to mark boxes on one side as well as on top. It's easier to find them that way. # The movers will thank you if you keep the boxes small to medium. Books are so heavy! Considerations - summer school would obtain materials from another source this year - after inventory staff would not check out materials while sorting and packing is being conducted Nancy Voltmer voltmer@netins.net District Media Specialist, ICN/Distance Learning Contact Saydel Community Schools Des Moines, Iowa =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
