I think it is both unconscionable and untenable to agree to police the books students check out. We have over 3400 students and there is no way we could adhere to a policy like that unless we significantly decreased other services or increased library staff. Even then, would we be liable when the student's friend checked out the book for him or her or if they simply skirted the issue by reading it in the library but not checking it out? I'm the mother of a six year old, and I know that what matters the most is what lessons my husband and I teach my daughter and how we model them. Though still young, she has already had numerous tests pitting what she knows is right for her and what others (peers, adults) say is right for her. That value judgement is the most important gift I can give her, and unless I plan on following her around the rest of her life, the best insurance I have. Just my personal opinion.
