In our district (18 elementary schools, 6 jr.hi, 2 hi)
we were told NOT to buy quizzes with our "materials"
budget. We started out several years ago with money
from the district, since it was implemented in 6 schools
BY the DISTRICT, not the individual schools or
librarians. The following year, a little more money was
provided, after that, nothing! One year the Regional
Teacher of the Year happened to come from our school:
she donated her $1000 award and specified it for AR.
Another year, a parent donated $200. This year, our
principal took several hundred out of her "AT RISK"
student account; that was enough for 75 new quizzes.

We only do AR in 6th grade, and the 6th grade students
have offered to either do a fund-raiser where they sell
something; or many of them have offered to donate $2.68
each to purchase one new quiz. What it comes down to is
that our funding comes from wherever we can find it!
Ironically, when they tell me which quiz title they
would like to purchase and I check on it for them, the
book is NEVER the level on which they are reading -
ALWAYS much LOWER!
