I want to thank everyone who responded with advice on how to melt chocolate to dip pretzel rods in to make magic wands for my Harry Potter Day. HP Day was last Thursday and went very well. 32 of the 40 registrees showed up, and we had a fun day of HP bingo, chocolate pretzel wand making, crafts, and trivia. The easiest method proved to be melting the chocolate in an electric frying pan on it's "wARM" setting. I used a one-pound mix of milk and dark chocolate chips I bought in the bulk section of the supermarket for $5.00 a pound. It melted within a minute and we were ready to go. After dipping, they rolled in a variety of "magical" substances, such as Ground Unicorn Horn (flaked coconut), Crushed Phoenix Fire (Red Sprinkles), Dragon Scales(multi-colored sprinkles with little dinosaurs in them). Then we laid them to dry on a table we'd lined with waxed paper and then , later, we put them in those little plastic pretzel bags to take home.
