Dear Group,

My original request was “I have a student who is interested in novels
about basketball. I know a
couple, but she wants more. She seems perfectly happy reading about
boys, so the gender of the protagonist is unimportant. All suggestions
welcome.” The last of four responses follows. Thanks to all who
contributed.

Joanne

Soto, Gary. Taking sides Lincoln Mendoza must come to terms with his
divided loyalties when he moves from the Hispanic inner city to a white
surburban neighborhood.

Tunis, John Roberts, 1889 Go, team, go When one player from the
overconfident team, the previous year's champions, is expelled for
gambling and the other four are penalized for breaking training, they
angrily quit the basketball varsity and leave the inferior B team
defending the school's record.

Updike, John Rabbit at rest Harry "Rabbit" Angstrom, an ex-basketball
player, struggles to make sense out of his life and the world around him
after coming to realize that his family and society have both changed.

Walden, Amelia Elizabeth Go, Phillips, go

Deuker, Carl. Night hoops / While trying to prove that he is good
enough to be on his high school's varsity basketball team, Nick must
also deal with his
parents' divorce and the erratic behavior of a troubled classmate who
lives across the street.

Cooper, Ilene. Choosing sides Jonathan doesn't want his father to
think he's a quitter, but middle school basketball--under the lash of a
gung-ho coach—is turning out to be anything but fun.

Klass, David. Danger zone

Myers, Walter Dean. Hoops.

Thanks again to all who contributed.
