Here is an impassioned plea to grant amnesty to your offending teacher.=20 Teachers are one of our chief ties with the students, not to deminish our = importance as librarians/teachers/helpers/friends, but teachers are one = way that we can help kids love reading, and books, and ideas, and = knowledge. It is just plain good PR, if nothing else, to write off such a = loss, painful as it is that it is a new book...and it will usually pay = dividends in the long run. Is this a new teacher? Maybe you can gently = impress him/her of the cost of materials by what you say to the students = in earshot of the teacher--just reminding them to keep materials out of = harm's (dog's!) way, but VERY gently. You may be working with his person = for a very long time, and setting a good foundation may be in everyone's = best interest. (A very wise library professor from my undergraduate days = made this plea to all of his students, and I think it was good advice and = it has always guided me in these situations. Over a career, I must say, it = has only come up a small handful of times.) Just one opinion! Happy New Year. Margaret Wuersten >>> Lori Fultz <FultzL@SIDNEY.K12.OH.US> - 1/3/02 7:43 AM >>> One of our teachers informed me the other day that her dog chewed up a new $30 library book. I'm not sure how to proceed. How have you handled = these situations? Since it is a teacher do you just let it go?
