I agree...if the book was checked out by a student and chewed up by a dog I
would expect some sort of payment, whether it be in cash or loss of
privileges or other reparation...(I cover the dog chewing completely at the
beginning of the school year)...if the teacher had it at home in a place
that was not safe, it is negligence. I have written off hundreds of books
over the years that have been lost in classrooms but whenever a teacher has
damaged a book (one last year spilled a cup of coffee over a brand new book)
I do expect payment. Fortunately whenever my teachers have been responsible
for a badly damaged book they have willingly paid for it. How can we teach
responsibility to the children if it isn't modelled? They learn a great deal
when their teacher owns up to having damaged a book. (we cannot demand
payment from the students since we have such a high free and reduced lunch
number...I do require a contact from the parent about lost books, either a
note or phone call.)
