It would be a VERY GOOD IDEA to install firewall software or add a router to your connection. Be aware that a firewall is NOT the same as anti-virus software. I'm assuming you are already running that. Want to test our current setup? Try Shields Up at https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 You will be surprised at the holes. The bad news is the hackers are constantly running probes. Install firewall software and you can get popups when something is happening. Scary, just realizing another attempt to get into your machine happened. Check Mcafee http://www.mcafee.com/myapps/firewall/ov_firewall.asp? Or Symantec http://service4.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nip.nsf/bf8979b59e5e8eb6882568f6006 0d10b/d4c0c4e706552ff488256ab700669f5b?OpenDocument Or TinySoftware http://www.tinysoftware.com/home/tiny?s=2434114231665776455A2&&pg=tpf_su mmary for firewall software info. There are shareware and other brands available, these get consistently good reviews. There are trial downloads and often promotional packages available. Routers plug into your cable modem. Linksys http://www.linksys.com d-link http://www.dlink.com/products/DigitalHome/Networking/ Netgear http://www.netgear.com/ all make them. If you are thinking of a second computer in the house, routers allow 4-8 additional connections to your modem and act as a firewall for all at the same time. You don't need to pay for additional connections or multiple copies of firewall software. We have 4 machines running at home, there seems to be no slowdown, even with 2 kids chatting, downloading, and on-line game playing at the same time. (Yes, they do use the machines for school work occasionally.) It's a Gateway 500X. Do we need a firewall? How do I find out? I searched "firewall" in the files and folders with no results. If we need one, could you make a recommendation? Thanks.
