This reminds me of the story I was told, over 20 years ago, of all the
librarians who painted little white-out diapers on the little boy in Maurice
Sendak's *In the Night Kitchen*. Keeping the book off the shelf is one
level of censorship. But this kind of response -- altering another's work
so it "looks better" and doesn't "disrupt classes unnecessarily" -- is so
ridiculous, it's funny. No -- it's downright scary. Besides being a
violation of copyright laws (illustrations in a book are intellectual
property just as the text is) it's also artistically unethical. And what
kind of message does this give kids, not only about nudity, but also about
"altering" books or parts of books?
