Things are the same here. I agree with what you say. Teachers don't help any with the situation when they insist that the resources be from the internet only-- especially after I spent a large share of my budget on new, authoritative sources for their classes. Did have a good experience today. The health teacher was in with her classes. I have bought lots of materials for her classes because she encourages kids to use print resources first. Anyway she told the kids that they could NOT print anything from the internet or photocopy pages from the reference books---they had to take notes! She explained to the kids that they need to be able to find the main ideas of the information that they were looking for-- she didn't want a huge paper just the main facts that they were asked to find about the disease they were researching. The kids were focused for the entire period instead of just running off copies and then chit-chatting. We talked about how kids don't really even know what they are looking for and often don't see it when it is directly in front of them. Michigan has a very high stakes test- MEAP- that requires students to find the main ideas of a reading selection and then do some writing on the topic/ or answer questions about it. She thought that this would be excellent practice for them. I'll bet the assignments will be much better than what she usually gets.
