Australian gems

A teacher asked me if there were an official gem of Australia. I wasn't
aware that countries had an official gem but guessed that the opal would be
a good candidate.
Could one of our Australian friends fill me in on this? If there is no
official stone, is there a major one as the diamond in South Africa?
