I want to say thanks to everyone who responded to my question concerning = suggestions for books for below grade level readers. Here are a few of = my responses: The genre is generally referred to as High Interest / Low Vocabulary. = There are several sets available from Perma-Bound = http://www.perma-bound.comunder the set title, Jump Starters, e.g. Jump Starters I, Jump Starters II, = etc. There are five sets, 50 books in each set, however you do not have to = buy all at once. The sets reflect how AR quizzes are grouped. These titles = are gearred for 7th grade up. I have also experimented with Tom and Ricky mystery series books, recommended by our special educ. teacher, one = example being, dancing monkey, by Bob Wright. All the Tom and Ricky titles are = by this author. You post however, reflects a need to more clearly define what you mean = by students who read "well below" grade level. Before our school became engulfed in Accelerated Reading, I had no idea how low some of our = students reading level was. Familiar with the author Margaret Hillert and her = books from my elementary days, I bought a bunch in paperback form on a lark a couple of years back. I characterize these books as one step above, = number - alphabet - concept books, and would classify them, interest level wise = as K-1. These circulate heavily in my middle school library with special = educ and ESL students. I continute to struggle to add materials to this part = of my collection. There are other publishers of this type of product. They generally are = not reveiwed in library publications. I hope others will provide some of = these companies, as they escape me at the moment. They are written at a third or = fourth-grade level, but the kids love them because they are funny. Or Captain = Underpants. The Among the Hidden, Betrayed and Imposters group is a fourth-grade = level book. So is Speak. The material is more mature, but the books are elementary-type levels. Chris This is a topic near and dear to my heart - so I've got a list of publishers of "high-low" books on my site at http://www.resourceroom.net/Surfin/index2.asp#hilow. Also, in the "reading comprehension" section I have some reviews of books I've read with my students (as well as an article about those "hi-lo" books and some instructional issues with them).=20 It is extremely easy to overestimate students' ability to "read" and somehow make up for lack of reading skills with inference skills. It's better to take the time to teach them to read. Sue Jones, webmastress http://www.resourceroom.net John Ericson's Hank the Cowdog stories (over 30 titles in the series) = are humorous, yet easy to read. The stories are really for all ages. My 16 = year old son, a GT student, great reader, still picks up a new Hank the = Cowdog book from time to time and thoroughly enjoys it. On the other hand, Hank books are often read by second and third graders who are ready for = chapter books. In the picture book category, try Chris Van Allsburg titles for older students. Some of Patricia Polacco's titles work well for older = students, too (Pink and Say, for example).
