Thank you all so much for all the responses that were sent regarding my MANY
sets of encyclopedias. The responses varied in weeding materials older than
5 years, others said 10+ years they should go.

I have weeded both sets of Compton's, both Golden Book Encyclopedia,
Children's Britannica, Brittanica Jr, and Finding Out. The dust on ALL of
these books was unbelievable, and unbearable as an allergy sufferer.

Until I can update these, I will keep the animal encyclopedias, Land and
People, Childcraft and World Book. Keeping the 2001 WB in Reference and
circulating the 1996 and 1999 editions, and offering 1993 to the first
teacher to respond.

I am undecided about Young People's Science and Grolier Children's
Encyclopedia. I have to look at these more in depth. Britannica, which
everyone said was too difficult for elementary, is in the library workroom
to see if it is used by teachers. I may decide to offer teachers so it won't
take up unnecessary space.

These were only the sets of encyclopedias in Reference, but does not include
the individual Reference materials. There is a book of presidents with the
last being LBJ, several dictionaries,(over 25, not including sets or
specialized) one dating back to 1948, several editions of Junior Authors and
various other single reference pieces. I now have a better idea of what to
keep and what can go after receiving the wonderful advice of list members.
Thank you again. This list is invaluable and should be a requirement for
library media students, and promoted by principals hiring media specialists.

I didn't realize that I would have to work this hard BEFORE starting the
job, but it would be a disservice to the children, teachers and myself if I
did not take this opportunity to get some order into the library, and
hopefully make it a welcoming and inviting place to visit.
