Our school recently acquired a large server which we will be setting up =
sometime next week. It will have Novell as the operating system and will =
mainly serve to distribute software (Accelerated Reader, Orchid, typing =
program, etc.) to classrooms and labs.
I would like to hear from other schools to see how the extra server =
space is being used. We have another server in the Technology =
department that holds the Technology web site and one of the tech =
teachers is in charge of it. Most of the technology students post their =
work there and eventually this will be accessible from the Internet =
(This is an Apple server)
My idea is to set up server space in the Novell server for students to =
save their work, as opposed to saving it in the workstations. I am not =
sure what the best way to do this is, since in the past we had space =
assigned to each student and it never got used. I envision this server =
space as a giant floppy that will allow students to save large files, =
then retrieve them later to burn to CD when time allows or retrieve them =
from a different lab or classroom to work on them. I don't expect =
students to use this very much, so I assume one directory would suffice =
for this. Students who are not in the Technology program would seldom =
need to prepare multimedia presentations and there isn't a person in =
charge who could upload and set up web pages, so I am hesitant to ask =
for Internet access (or even an Intranet with html interface) to be set =
up for this server. General district policy right now is to set up these =
servers as internal servers without internet access from outside, so =
this is, right now, a moot point.
Our district provides access to email through its mail server, so I =
wouldn't need to provide email services to teachers. The technology =
committee decided not to teach the use of email to students (security =
issues, viruses, just like "passing notes in class", etc), so I wouldn't =
need to set up student email accounts either. Our library database is =
also centralized, and it is held in a separate server somewhere =
downtown.
That leaves me with plenty of hard drive space after all the software is =
loaded and no immediate need for it. I was hoping this group would be an =
inspiration. The district purchased servers in bulk to obtain the best =
price, and, since we needed a server to distribute our new software, we =
purchased what was available, which in my opinion, is going to be =
under-utilized.
Thanks for taking the time to read this post.=20
