Some interesting research was summarized in this article:
Lynn, Andrea. "UI Study Finds What Puts Pall on Plagiarism." Illinois
Alumni
(ISSN 1096-5866), vol. 15, issue 1, July/August 2002, p. 4.

Two college professors found that stern warnings to their students did not
deter them from plagiarism. However, warnings that student papers
would be checked by plagiarism-detection software did serve as a deterrent.
The professors used Essay Verification Engine (EVE) to evaluate the student
papers. It was observed that paper mills may make plagiarism more difficult,
since they have contributed to the success of detection programs. Findings
also showed that 1 out of 8 papers had blatant or casual plagiarism. While
only a few students were intentionally dishonest, many were unclear on the
rules about plagiarism. Ironically, students had received so many lectures
about the subject that they ignored them.

Brian Gaines, University of Illinois professor of political science, and
Bear Braumoeller, professor of government at Harvard University, reported
their research in a recent issue of PS: Political Science and Politics.
