Hi LM_NETters!
I gave it two weeks and never received any tests that had been previously developed
for assessing Information Literacy skills before a program began. So I will have
to work on one with my colleagues. We have decided to use some of the questions
found on the survey of the AASL's webpage as a starting point.

I received MANY requests to explain what a Power Library is. So I have decided to
share my quick explanation. What we're doing at Bayard is based on much of the
information gathered from the Colorado Study. It is based on teaching students
library skills in the context of the needs expressed by the classroom teachers. I
have a totally flexible schedule, my teachers reserve times to meet with me to plan
a unit, and then we proceed to team teach the unit. Most of these are research
units. I like to request that students use a minumum of 3 sources, a book, a
reference tool, and an Internet Site that they accessed through the OPAC. I teach
them how to use the resources when they need to use them for their classwork. I
try to discourage use of search engines until they have had the lesson on website
evaluation. The cooperation and support of your administration is essential. My
principal required all teachers to do at least one research project with me the
first year, and we are presently in the middle of a Unit Development class that the
University of Delaware is giving any participating teachers 3 credits for. If you
want to know more about Power Libraries check out the AASL's "Information Power:
Building Parnterships for Learning" at: http://www.ala.org/aasl/ip_products.html
This publication is the backbone of most of the Information Literacy programs in
our country right now. Hope that helps! Marcy
