Marcia (cc: LMNET list) - I noticed in a recent LMNET posting, a definition of "what is a Power Library" had been shared. Just for the record, I wanted to let everyone know that the phrase "Power Library" was coined here in 1998 as part of a statewide project called the Power Library Project (PLP). It's goals were similar to those described: flexible scheduling, principal support, teacher buy-in, and collaborative planning, coupled with mentoring between "high performance" and "developing" libraries. We developed numerous self-assessments of both the program and information literacy to support this program, some of which are included in the recently published Colorado information literacy standards and library program guidelines, available at www.cemacolorado.org <www.cemacolorado.org> . The AASL information pointed to in Marcia's reply refers to the DeWitt-Wallace Reader's Digest Library Power project, and Information Power. While elements of both were incorporated into PLP, it has become a unique project aimed, in part, at getting librarians to work with teachers to raise test scores on our state's numerous standards assessments in gr 3-10. We did a study in 2000 of the impact resulting from PLP participation, which are published at http://www.lrs.org/documents/fastfacts/178powerlibs.pdf <http://www.lrs.org/documents/fastfacts/178powerlibs.pdf> . The PLP now entering its 5th year through one of our System libraries, CCLS, in Denver. You can read more about it at their website: www.cclsweb.org <www.cclsweb.org> . Of course it's possible that others across the country came up with the same idea, perhaps even the same name, in the last 5 or 6 years. Hence, we're not claiming copyright or trademark on the term, but do feel it was probably one of the earlier uses of that exact phrase in conjunction with these goals and activities. I'd be glad to elaborate should anyone wish to contact me off-list. ____________________________________________ Eugene Hainer Director of Library Development Colorado State Library, CO Dept of Education 201 E. I gave it two weeks and never received any tests that had been previously developed for assessing Information Literacy skills before a program began. So I will have to work on one with my colleagues. We have decided to use some of the questions found on the survey of the AASL's webpage as a starting point. I received MANY requests to explain what a Power Library is. So I have decided to share my quick explanation. What we're doing at Bayard is based on much of the information gathered from the Colorado Study.
