I received several messages from others having the same 98 shutdown problem.
Some said it had to do with networked computers--yes, but I also have the
problem at home on my non-networked computer that has windows 98. I
received several helpful messages, I have not completed these tasks, but
here are some ideas. Thanks to all who replied.....

problem.
Maybe it will work for you. This information comes from Inside Microsoft
Windows, a ZD Journal. It was written for windows 95, but I use it with
my windows 98 with no problems.

" Launch the Create Shortcut wizard by right-clicking on the desktop and
selecting New, then choosing Shortcut from the shortcut menu. Once the
Creat Shortcut wizard loads, type

c:\windowns\rundll.exe user.exe,exitwindows

in the Command Line textbox, (Make sure there isn't a space between the
comman and the exitwindows parameter; otherwise, the comman won't work.)
To continue, click Next.

When the next page appears, type Shut Down Windows NOW! (or whatever you
want to name the icon) in the Select A Name For the Shortcut text box
and click Finish. Now, when you're ready to shut down Windows, close all
your applications as you normally would, and then just double-click on
the new Shut Down icon."

I've used this shortcut on several different machines, and have had
great success with it. Hope this helps you too.
