I am sorry to say the first few responses I got all suggested a new printer!
I hope I don't need to do this, as I can't afford one until I get a job. And
I need the printer to get a job . . . .
Here are the suggestions I am going to try:
Try this:
Solution A
1. turn the printer off, computer off, switch them on again
2. open a new document on word , prefer a line of word (type them do not cut
+ paste)
3. print it
4. if it works, print the doc you want
5. if this time not working , it is the problem of the word doucment
i came to this problem 2-3 times before, i have to TYPE the document's first
few lines again and try, usually this work

You need to replace the cartridge holder. This happened to me. Call Canon
and ask to buy the part, or buy the cartridges with the holder that has the
chip or copper wires on it.
That is what is wrong. Your printer is alright.

Cindy, sounds like a corrupted driver. See if the canon site has
drivers to download. Be sure to match up your model and your
operating system if that option is there. They may also have the
manuals...

Have you checked the cable connections? A loose cable can also
cause odd things to happen...
