LM_NET Archive

Hi all,

I am trying to remember where I heard or read that there are only seven
stories and any thing else is a varitation on these seven stories. I
thought I would try the collecive wisdom of LM-NET and maybe get a name of
the person or persons who said this or even a reference to a text. This is
for an essay for a unit I am doing on Myth and Ideology at Deakin. Below is
an actual copy of my essay question :

"Myths are similar in literary form to folk tales and legends, but they have
a different social function. They instruct as well as amuse, and sometimes
a group of them become esoteric stories, to be revealed only to initiates."
(Northrop Frye, quoted Unit A Study Guide p. 13) With very careful attention
to definitions and examples, and with reference to at least two of the
prescribed texts, present your views of the forms and functions of myth.

If you have any ideas, even if it is just a list of the seven stories I
would appreciate the help.

Thank you in advance.

Cheers

Christina
