Thanks to all who took the time to empathize and share thoughts with me
yesterday when I was feeling particularly isolated in my stance.

All of you agreed that giving those books was not appropriate but that
there are times when we have to "strike while the iron is hot."  I
guess, if I have to find an error on my part, it was not 'giving in' to
the development office administrator without question.  I don't see that
as my role.  Some of you have said this is protocol for a private
school.  I've never run into a similar situation in all 25 years I've
been here.

Well, I wrote a memo proposing special rules for special patrons...I'll
see if they respond or ignore me altogether.  I just hope the
development office doesn't decide to dissuade people from funding future
library projects because of this.
