I print off multiple copies of an Xcel template I made - but you can use any program/table. This has columns headed *location *title *publisher *date (with instructions for identifying the copyright date) I issue these first to a "liberry lessons" class, with instructions to select any shelf (from non-fiction initially). They then fill out the details for the first 10 books that are on that shelf. From these proformas, I calculate the average age (from the copyright dates) of the books from that shelf, then average the accumulated averages. May not be a very accurate method of age assessment, but it seems to give quite a good indication. When this exercise is repeated with staff - particularly executives - they are, without exception, unpleasantly surprised. Hope this is of interest/help/use?
