OK, folks:
to paraphrase an old comic strip -- Pogo -- "we have seen the enemy, and they is
us."
We are never going to resolve this argument, for reasons that go way beyond our job
titles or even responsibilities.
Bottom line:
1. Schools need libraries, and people to run those libraries.
2. Administrators frequently have no idea what is really involved in a quality
library program.
3. People with teaching *experience* tend to be better *school* librarians than
those without such prior educational survival skills.
4. Yes, every school should have access to a fully-staffed, fully-funded,
fully-flexible library program run by a fully-certificated professional school
librarian/educational media specialist/resourcerer. But it ain't gonna happen in
our lifetimes.
5. A rose by any other name might very well be a stink-weed. It's the thorns
you've got to worry about.
6. We will not advance our own positions by denigrating others who are doing the
best that they can under the circumstances.
8. Our professional associations need to spend less time arguing about who/what is
a professional, and spend more time promoting the *value* of professional services
to the rest of the educational infrastructure.
and
7. School librarians are people and service-oriented, in that order. .The same
could NEVER be said of any systems engineer. Arrogant -- not us: we're too busy
trying to help people, no matter WHAT our job titles.

Let's move on, now. Shall we?
