My kids have enjoyed:

Sci Fi:  John Christopher's Tripod Trilogy and Sword of the Spirits Trilogy
Fantasy:  Diana Wynne Jones, especially the Dalemark Quartet and The Dark Wizard of 
Dirkholm and its
sequel; a few short stories books, the Chrestomanci books (chronicles?)
Ursula LeGuin, particularly the Earthsea books
Susan Cooper:  The Dark is Rising sequence
William Nicholson:  The Wind Singer and its sequel
Peter Dickinson:  The Ropemaker
T.A. Barron: the Merlin Epic (5 books)
reread the Chronicles of Narnia
Rosemary Sutcliffes
Dia Calhoun: Firegold
Garth Nix: They loved Sabrel and Lirael
If he likes the Arthur stories, or if he might:
    Kevin Crossley-Holland: Arthur: The Seeing Stone and At the Crossing Places
    Mary Stewart: The Crystal Cave
These are just our favorites off the top of our heads.
