Well. . . . I suppose how well you should know the manual depends on your
supervisor, school policies etc.

My district isn't all that big and we have no such thing as a district wide
media program policy manual.

But. . . . . . . I do have a procedures/policy book for the middle school
media cneter and I find it quite helpful; there are things in there we can
share with volunteers, with teachers or just refer to ourselves. For
example, one useful thing is a simple list of what kinds of cartridges go
with which printers or directions on checking in/out that we can share with
a substitute secretary. Also, as lead media spec. for the distirct
I've developed policies (not board approved types of things) that are
helpful for those people. But, no, we don't expect anyone to study it. I
also find it helpful to have policies such as the web policy or selection
policy handy in case anyone asks.

So, I would say you should know what's in the manual and know where to look
if you need to!
