I use a product called "Goo Gone" that is available in Wal-Mart, Target, etc. It's a petroleum based oily product that removes crayon, gum, labels, etc. I pour some on a rag and then gently wipe the surface that needs to be cleaned. Hardback books with a slick surface aren't usually a problem. However, if the book has a porous cover--cloth, I wouldn't use the product. If the paperback book doesn't have a thick cover, you might want to use sparingly. After you clean the cover, you want to wipe the remaining oils from the book cover. I've never had a problem with is seeping through the cover and I've used it on countertops, tables, chairs, walls, books, toys, etc. I wouldn't use it on rugs unless I was prepared to immediately clean the carpets. The cost is around $2.00. Just an idea. ~Shonda Brisco Trinity Valley Upper School Librarian Ft.
