How many sets of encyclopedias are REALLY necessary for a K-5 library of approx. 400 students? I am the new librarian and am trying to open as much space as possible because I have no room to add new material in Reference or any other part of the library, and because the library is too cluttered and unappealing. I have 2 sets of Compton's(1992); Britannica(1986), and these look like they have not been touched in the 16 years they've been on the shelf; World Book(1993,1996,1999,and 2001); 2 sets of The Golden Book Encyclopedia(1986?); Oxford Children's Encyclopedia(1991); The Grolier Children's Encyclopedia(1994); Raintree Children's Encyclopedia(1988); Childcraft(1985); Children's Britannica(1988); Britannica Junior Encyclopedia(1984); Lands and People(1983); The New Grolier Student Encyclopedia(1989); Finding Out: Silver Burdett's Children's Encyclopedia(1980); Young People's Science Encyclopedia(1985); Encyclopedia of the Animal World(1972); The Illustrated Encyclopedia of the Animal Kingdom(1971) I have thought about putting the Britannica's in the workroom to see if they are used by the teachers, but am not sure if this is the right decision because the information may not be accurate. There is also one set each of The New Book of Knowledge, The World Book Student Discovery Encyclopedia, The Raintree Illustrated Science Encyclopedia, People and Places that appear to be up to date(1998-). I am planning to keep these and also the World Book 2001 without question. Are there any of the above that I absolutely should not consider discarding? Your advice and opinions are appreciated.
