Thanks to everyone who suggested these titles:

35 votes for Phantom Tollbooth - dog's name is Tock;  he is a watchdog
(his body is a watch)

1 person suggested Tuck, but that has a girl on the cover.

 We have three copies of the book, so I'll present it to the student
tomorrow, and see what he says. I knew I could count on y'all!
