Publishing Children's Work

I recently completed a 6th grade writing workshop.  The end product was to
be one piece that they would give to me and I will try to have them
published.  I am using Highlights, Stone Soup, some local contests.  Anyone
have some great suggestions?  Not looking, of course, for any payment.  Just
for the thrill of having your name in print as the author for these kids.
Most of the work is short essays or funny poems, one or two children's style
picture books.
