I check out about 150 titles from our library to a fictitious patron called: Winner! Winner! I choose popular books, classics, new titles -- a wide variety. The books are then reshelved, and when a student checks one out, they are the winner. They can choose any paperback book in their grade-level box as a National Library Week reward for reading. If they win a second time, they get a book mark. Third time doesn't count, but they know that up front. I continue with the awards for a month, or until the books are gone, which ever comes first. The upper classes have already asked if I'm doing Winner! Winner! again. I use the paperback books that I take from the book fairs (I have two per year) for rewards. Teachers also can win when they check out books for the classroom.
