Any work is =automatically= protected by copyright as soon as it is
"fixed in tangible form". That means written down, typed into a computer
and saved to disk, recorded on tape, painted on canvas, etc. You need do
nothing further to have the benefit of copyright protection.

However, if you might wish to sue someone for appropriating your work,
you must REGISTER your copyright with the US Copyright Office. The
necessary forms are available online at the copyright office website,
accessible from the Library of Congress homepage. The requirements for
deposit differ by medium, so read the directions carefully. The cost is
$30 to register one work. If you write short works such as short
stories, essays, poems, etc. it may be better to register them as a
group or collection and save some $$. Your copyright will last for the
life of the author plus 70 years.

Your work may or may not go into the Library of Congress collection.
They collect the materials that are presented to them for cataloging.
The work must be published, but you send galleys to LC for them to
catalog so you can get CIP in the final printing. Getting your work into
LC is much more a publishing matter than a copyright one.
