I vaguely remember a picture book about a flying squirrel. I was about 6 or
7 years old (I think) in 1969/70. The squirrel was the main character & I
don't remember anything else about it. Any ideas as to the title/author of
this? Thanks a lot!

I have an art teacher who is interested in my reading a book to a 3rd
grade class, and helping the children pick characters. Since we are both
on fixed schedules, they will make paper mache masks in art, while I
help them write a play. She suggested taping it, they tend to giggle
while performing it for younger students. This is my first year , and
has anyone ever done this? What books do you recommend? The class has 18
students. She did it once with a variant of Cinderella.

Thank you !

Here are some titles for your students looking for civil war books. Of =
course my all time favorite is Pink and Say by Patricia Polacco.=20
Some others:=20
Across Five Aprils by Irene Hunt=20
Bull Run by Paul Fleischman. This tells a story with a poem for 12 =
voices. This might be good to suggest to some teachers.=20
Girl in Blue or Amelia's War by Anne Rinaldi, and also the American =
Girls collection if you have girls interested in the subject.=20
Soldier's Heart by Gary Paulsen is based on a real boy and an excellent =
story.=20
The Long Road to Gettysburg by Jim Murphy describes the battle and =
dedication of Gettysburg and also has black and white illustrations.=20
Finally, if you have students interested in history in general, the book =
We Were There Too, by Phillip M. Hoose tells about several young people =
throughout history.=20
I hope this helps!=20

Hello All,

The Henry Builds a Cabin Activity Website is based on the recently
released picture book, Henry Builds a Cabin by the award winning author
D.B. Johnson. It is a book for all ages because of the multiple layers
about Henry David Thoreau and his cabin building at Walden Pond. The
Activity Website engages students in lots of hands-on, minds-on, and
technology-based learning. There are primary sources from the Cornell
University Library Nineteenth Century Periodicals, Concord Free Public
Library, and Thoreau Institute at Walden Woods. QuickTime movies of the
author, Thoreau (portrayed by Richard Smith), animals, and original
building materials from the vault at the Thoreau Institute at Walden Woods
round out a resource that brings the life of Thoreau to students of all
ages. We hope you will enjoy these activities.

Subject: Target: Library Automation software for business

Hi all - does anyone know of a simple library automation software package
that a business could use to check boxes (of files) in and out to employees?
It can be very simple, all they need to do is keep track of who has what
file. Please respond to my e-mail address if possible, thank you.

I check out about 150 titles from our library to a fictitious patron called:
Winner! Winner! I choose popular books, classics, new titles -- a wide
variety. The books are then reshelved, and when a student checks one out,
they are the winner. They can choose any paperback book in their
grade-level
box as a National Library Week reward for reading. If they win a second
time, they get a book mark. Third time doesn't count, but they know that up
front. I continue with the awards for a month, or until the books are gone,
which ever comes first. The upper classes have already asked if I'm doing
Winner! Winner! again. I use the paperback books that I take from the book
fairs (I have two per year) for rewards.
Teachers also can win when they check out books for the classroom.

Subject: TARGET: Character identification needed

Upon going through my son's bookcase today, I came across a hand drawn
laminated poster which said, "Hi, I'm Polly" with a picture of a girl. He
told me it wasn't his and my daughter told me it wasn't hers. They both told
me it must be my other daughter's, but she's too old to have had this. All
I
can assume is that since they had author visits every year in school, this
was from a visiting author and might have been given as a prize.
I am not familiar with this character....and am asking all the experts to
figure this one out! (I know you'll come through--you always do!)

THANKS

I have a similar copyright question. Somebody asked me how to get a book
formally copyrighted and in the Library of Congress collection. Can
anybody help me.
