Irma S. and James H. Black Award for Excellence in Children's Literature = has been presented annually since 1973 by Bank Street College of Education.= The Award goes to an outstanding book for young children--a book in which = text and illustrations are inseparable, each enhancing and enlarging on = the other to produce a singular whole. The Award is unusual in that children are the final judges of the winning = book. The process is as follows: From the many children's books published = each year, an adult group of writers, librarians and educators choose = approximately twenty books that they consider the best candidates for the = Award. These books are then sent (in four sets) to the four 8-9s and 9-10s = classrooms at the Bank Street School for Children. Over the course of five = weeks the children read and discuss all of the books before selecting four = finalists. These four--called the Irma S. and James H. Black Honor = Books--are placed in classrooms or libraries in several different schools, = in New York and elsewhere. The children in these classrooms read, examine, = discuss, and re-read the books over a four week period, before they select = the winning book. Over 1,000 children vote in the final round. Last year's winner was The Raft written and illustrated by Jim LaMarche. = HarperCollins. The threee honor books were Basho and the Fox written by = Tim Myers, illustrated by Oki S. Han. Marshall Cavendish. Click, Clack, = Moo Cows That Type written by Doreen Cronin, illustrated by Betsy Lewin. = Simon and Schuster Books for Young Readers.Mammalabilia written and = illustrated by Douglas Florian. Harcourt.=20 This year due to requests from LM Netters for information about our = picture book study, I am announcing the finalists to LM Netters so that if = they would like to participate in the picture books study they can. This year's finalists are Three Pigs by Wiesner, Clarion=20 And the dish ran away with the spoon by Stevens, Harcourt Milo's Hat Trick, Agee, Hyperion A Fine Fine School, Creech, Harper We ask that the teachers in our school and the cooperating schools spend = at least four weeks with the four finalists. The books are to be = available to children to enjoy leisurely, they are read aloud a number of = times in large groups and small groups. Librarians and teachers plan and = implement reading response activities such as interviewing the characters, = making trading cards with the characters and places, drawing maps, = retelling the tales, readers theater etc. Teachers and librarians lead = discusions on what makes an excellent picture book. Some of the questions = we ask are...Do the words go with the story? Do the pictures express ideas = as well as the words. Do you look forward to what comes next? Were there = any surprises?
