Thanks, Carol for the clarification. I wrote my response too quickly,
obviously. I use your book often - it is the best on the subject.

George, mailing will prove creation, but you cannot sue someone for
copyright infringement unless the item was registered with the copyright
office "in a timely manner." Not only books can be registered with the
copyright office. I register my courseware all the time. Library of Congress
will not catalog material unless you send it for CIP. That process may take
several months to up to a year.

The number that you get from Bowker is an ISBN number, not a barcode.
Automation systems use barcodes, though sometimes ISBN numbers are used as
stock numbers (hence have a UPC rendering of the ISBN) on the backs of trade
books.

The address for the copyright office is http://www.loc.gov/copyright/
<http://www.loc.gov/copyright/ > In
essence, anything you create is automatically copyrighted as soon as you
create it. If you are afraid that someone will steal it somehow, you can
put a copy of the item in an envelope and mail it to yourself. Keep it
sealed. The US Postal Service postmark date would show when you created in
court.
To copyright a book, follow the procedures at the above site. In essence the
process is to send two copies and some money and LOC will catalog and send
you notice of copyright.
To acquire a barcode for an item, go to www.bowker.com. Barcode numbers are
purchased in groups of ten, so often individuals have extras they wouldn't
mind sharing or selling to others.
