GEN:using pictures from the internet

I am having a debate at my school re: student use of pictures from the
internet for class projects.  Students trim the photos to fit a poster or
whatever so that you cannot tell where it came from.  I say that you need to
leave the credit on in view, and that you need to e-mail for permission to
use it.  Teachers say it comes under fair use and that students don't need to
ask permission.  I can't find anything to support my arguement.  Any sources
to help me?
