Dear colleagues, It is my custom to send replies not only to the person who asks the question but also to the list, so that interested folk can see the replies. However, that means I often get private responses to questions that I never asked, but had attempted to answer. That doesn't help the original poser of the question. May I suggest - Peter, is this appropriate? - that when responding you post to the person AND to the list, unless the questioner specifically requests responses privately?
