I made a short video with 7th graders for a course I took last semester. The hint I have is to get parents to sign permission slips saying it is = ok for their children to be videotaped. =20 Please post a hit if you receive any replies! I need to do something similar, only with 4th &5th graders. The previous "Media Specialist" had = a very different approach to teaching than I do- she stressed the = technology, but not the planning. I want these kids to know how to do more than run = a camera- I feel that they should be able to thoughtfully plan and = critically evaluate their projects. I'd appreciate anything you can pass on. =20 I don't know if it is possible...but it might be easier to buy a Mac = which includes the free "I-Movie" program. This program is very easy to use. = If you are planning to do digital editing on windows based machines you are looking at purchasing a video card and a program which will probably not = be as easy to use as I-Movie. =20 It was with interest that I read your request for PC video editing software. I would love to have a recommendation. I took a video editing class recently, but we only used MAC software, and the school I work in only has PCs. I feel clueless, because the instructor couldn't even recommend any PC software. Thanks for your help! =20 I bought a great JVC digital video camera this year and it came with = some video editing software and recommendations for more sophisticated = software as well. =20 I personally prefer the Pinnacle Studio line of editing software, they = have several versions (www.pinnaclesys.com), but have been forced to use the software that comes with iMac in my class (budget restrictions). There = are several other lines than the Pinnacle one and I've tried a few (uLead = and MGI come to mind) but found Pinnacle more comfortable to use. The more expensive versions include Adobe Premiere as part of the package. There = is also a program that comes with Windows ME (and I think 2000) that seems = to be okay, but I've only glanced at it. =20 Mac is used by many people in the industry, but there is a myriad of > software available in the PC format. I do not edit with the computer. > The high school system is an analog A/B roll configuration. You could > purchase a smaller "cuts only" system for about $9,000, and tie your > computer into that for graphics etc. If you want to edit via the > computer, be very careful and remember...YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR! = You > want DV editing with real time effects, titles, etc. I am told, = although > I have never seen it operate, that the new Adobe Premiere 6.0 is = ample. You > can do DV editing on the Windows platform as well as crossover to some = Web > formats. That program costs about $600.00. Keep in mind that if you = want > to be able to do motion graphics or effects, you will have to add = Adobe > After effects 5.5 at about $550.00. Another option isPinnacle Systems > DV500 Plus. that software allows you to do native DV editing with > real-time effects, titles & filters. It Also comes with Adobe = Premiere > 6.0 at a price of about $650.00 (This program supports Windows > XP/2000/NT/Me/98SE/98 operating systems.) Pinnacle also has a pretty = good > support team in Sharon MA. There is also a Matrox RT-2500 system at = about > $900.00 which includes the Matrox G550 32MB card. One of the top = names in > DV editing is Avid. Their basic software package runs about $1,300.00 = - > $2.000.00 and you can purchase a turnkey system from some vendors as = low > as $5,499.00. The other key is hard drive space.. HAVE MORE THAN YOU = EVER > THOUGHT YOU NEEDED! > This is one of the "hottest" areas going at present, and there are = "tons" > of companies telling you how good their software is and what it will = do. > Still, you want to be able to bring that DV edit job back out to VHS = or > S-VHS or burn it in to a DVD in real time. You could call Kevin Long = at > Great Northern Video, 1-800-631-6812. He is up to date on what is and > what isn't successful. Just tell him I sent you to him. Again, = Diane, > the one thing that I've learned is... in video, you get what you pay = for! >=20 > I saw that you are looking for a good camera as well. I have a Canon = GL1. > It is a sturdy, light, durable piece with a 20X to 100X optical zoom, = 270K > pixels, IEEE 1394 DV interface, a photo mode and PCM stereo. It also > takes an adaptor ($150.00) that will allow you to use 2 wireless mikes > with XLR's. The camera sells for about $2,200.00, not including the = case > ($250.00). We've had very good luck with this camera! >=20 > If you want to come up and see what is here in the studio, pleas feel = free > to do so at any time. Oh, just so you know... my only internet access = is > in Bob Schubert's old office and I don't have a chamce to get in there > every day. As a result I don't get E-Mails right away, but = eventually, I > will get back to you. =20 Would appreciate your posting a hit re: editing programs. Pinnacle = (notes at school) has won PC magazine award and was recommended by a = friend who edits frequently, but is much more skilled than I am. I'd = like to know what our media specialists think. =20 Based on what kind of funding you have I think that the Pinnacle DV500 > Plus > at about $549.95 would be a good choice. This hardware offers you > real-time editing with Adobe Premiere 6.0 (included), real-time > multi-track audio, real-time 16:9 widescreen fx. real-time slo-mo, = color > correction capabilities and TitleDeko RT with a video output so you = can > preview your graphic creations. > You can also by this from Bay Road Inc. out of Sharon, MA. They are = nice > people with a great support system. In fact, you might be able to = pick-up > this system or it downgrade at Comp USA! (I wouldn't buy from them, > though.) > In reference to cameras, you might want to look at the Sony = DCR-PC120BT > (Bluetooth), the Sony DCR- PC9, the Sony DCR-TRV30, the Panasonic > PV-DV951, the Panasonic PV-DV701, or the Canon ZR-50MC. Canon also = makes > the Optura 100, which is supposed to be good. Best of Luck! Diane Holzheimer Media Specialist Nathaniel P.
