Many years ago, I had to undertake such a project on the cheap. I found my
best [free] source was the local hospital. They recieved supplies on certain
days of the week and I was able to coordinate with them to pick up the empty
boxes. Grocery stores are another source that go through countless boxes.
These boxes will not be a common size, and some will likely be to big, i.e.
if you filled them to the top, no one could lift them.

In this situation, no matter the quality of the box, if you stack them to
high, they will fall over.

While on the topic, I would recommend clearly labeling each box - on the
side where you can see it when stacked - the classification range of the
books inside AND - a numerical numbering of the boxes, i.e. Fiction - Shelf
1. This will greatly reduce the time in moving into the new library. When I
could not get an entire shelf into one box, I labeled it in a fashion,
Fiction - Shelf 1a and Fiction - Shelf 1b. I did not bother to try to keep
the books in order within the box as by the time they got put back on the
shelf in the new facility they were mixed up anyway. My number one goal was
getting the books on the shelf and looking respectable. We then started
working on reading the shelves. I followed the same strategy when I open a
new library several years ago.

The PREFERRED method would be for the district to purchase boxes - all of a
common size. The district I now work in is large enough that it stores and
reuses boxes for situations such as these.

Good Luck.

Subject: GEN: Boxes used to pack books

We, too, are packing up our entire library. Last year we had to pack just
our fiction section but this year it's the whole thing.

Does anyone have a suggestion of where to get good boxes for packing and
storage of books? The boxes we had last year were too big to hold one shelf
of books and too small to hold two shelves. We ended up going with one
shelf per box. Then, when all the boxes were stacked and stored for the
summer, several of them collapsed at the top because they had 5-6" of open
space inside the box. After the boxes collapsed, some of the piles fell
over...etc. It was a bit of a mess.

We are willing to buy boxes, if that is what is necessary.

Please let me know of any suggestions you might have.

Thank you,

Nancy Reed
