Dear LM_NET Colleagues,
In the past several days in my personal e-mail I have received various
versions of a "missing child" e-mail hoax. Of course, they tend to come
from the most well-meaning and kindest people I know, especially those who
are relatively new to the Internet.
One quick way I check to see if such a message is a hoax, is to use a
search engine to search on some key phrase in the suspected hoax letter
(e.g., "Penny Brown"), and then if necessary, narrow the search with the
term "hoax". That usually pulls up numerous links to Internet Hoax sites
that expose the hoax. Google is pretty effective for narrowing searches of
this type.

"Internet Hoaxes, Urban Legends, and Viruses". It is part way down the
