Here is a Hit of the responses I received. More requests were for information than solutions to the sign in concerns. Hope the following helps. Our library uses Athena by Sagebrush which does not have a patron in and out module. Our attendance software is SASI which we could scan study hall students but our rules have those students report first to their study hall teacher. Thank you for your replies. Linda Dougherty, Librarian Northwest High School House Springs, MO lindou@mindspring.com ------------------------------------------------------------- There is new fingerprint ID software and hardware available for Spectrum and, I think, for one or two other circ systems. Perhaps this could be used as a quick method to monitor attendance? --------------------------------------------------------------- Our automation system has an attendance module that we use to scan the students into the library. We use it only for the students that come from study hall to stay for the entire period. We then print out the list and send it to the study halls for attendance purposes. We still maintain a sign in sheet for those who are sent from a classroom on a pass. That way they sign in and out and we can check the time if needed. We are an INFOhio school, which means we are on the same system as 1800 other Ohio school buildings and use DRA Multilis. We have around 1750 students. -------------------------------------------------------------- The large (over 2000) high schools in the Francis Howell District use an electronic time clock that sits on the counter. Students put their written library passes in the time clock and it is date and time stamped. They drop the pass in a basket and must repeat the process when they leave. ----------------------------------------------------------- Within the automation system of Alexandria V5 we could scan a patron in and out using their student ID. The program maintains a log which has time indicated. See if you could make two fake barcodes within your system--one for patron in and one for patron out. Print the barcodes and place on counter by scanner. Students could sign themselves in and out unless you have someone at the desk who could oversee it. My elementary school has two librarian workstations. We scan books in on the one where students pass by as they enter the library and another for checkout a bit further over. ------------------------------------------------------------ This year we began scanning attendance directly into the attendance portion of our school records. In the past we did the clipboard thing, then our secretary typed the ID numbers into the program. On a hunch, we opened up the attendance program and tried scanning in an ID -- it WORKED! Now attendance is often done as the final bell rings. We've eliminated a whole period of work for the secretary. Students can begin working at the bell rather than after a 15-20 minutes wait in line. No more illegible handwriting. Downside: if we need to retake attendance (to catch those who decide to take a walkabout) we don't have a "by period" record. We can print out a list for the current day and pick out the particular period. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
